Victoria Unveils Ambitious Housing Targets to Address Population Growth

Victoria’s state government has unveiled draft council targets aimed at facilitating the construction of 25 million new homes by 2051. These targets are designed to meet the burgeoning population and housing demands across various local government areas (LGAs), with a strategic focus on established suburbs.

Geelong leads with the highest target of 139,800 new homes by 2051, followed by Melbourne CBD and outer suburbs like Melton. Outer suburban LGAs such as Wyndham, Casey, and Hume have also been allocated significant housing goals under the plan.

The government’s strategy emphasizes a 70-30 split, directing 70% of new homes to established areas and 30% to outer-suburban growth zones. Ongoing consultations with councils aim to finalize these targets and adjust local planning regulations to accommodate the proposed housing expansions.

This initiative forms part of Victoria’s comprehensive approach to meet the rising housing demand, aligning governmental and local efforts to ensure adequate housing opportunities across the state.
