Brisbane Considers Airbnb Permit System Amid Housing Supply Concerns

The Brisbane City Council is contemplating the introduction of a permit system for Airbnb properties in response to mounting concerns over housing supply. Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner has proposed a year-long review aimed at ensuring proper planning approvals and support from body corporates for 24-7 property management.

Currently, the council imposes higher rates on short-stay accommodations perceived to operate for business purposes rather than standard residential use. This move comes amid a housing supply crisis exacerbated by rising house prices and rental demand in Brisbane.

Stakeholders, including the Strata Community Association Queensland, have expressed support for the council’s initiative but advocate for broader statewide reforms to better regulate short-term accommodations across Queensland.
